Welcome to Kent College

Introducing the new Headmaster of Kent College

The Governing Body of Kent College, Canterbury is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Mark Turnbull as the new Headmaster of Kent College.

Mr Turnbull succeeds Dr David Lamper who has retired after serving thirteen years of leadership at Kent College.

Mark brings a wealth of experience in the independent school sector to the role. Mark was previously the Head of Giggleswick School for 7 years and is highly regarded.

As a boy, Mark attended Marlborough College and went on to study a BA in Geography at Liverpool University, subsequently completing an MA at the University of London. His first teaching role was at Sevenoaks School where he went on to become Head of Boarding. In 2008 he became the Deputy Head of Eastbourne College before taking up the Headship at Giggleswick in 2014. He was also nominated as the Tatler Head of the Year in 2020.

Mark said “ I am aware of the huge legacy of David Lamper and I am excited to lead the College as it enters the next stage of its growth and development.”

He puts particular emphasis on the importance of the individual student and building their love of learning. Mark is committed to empowering people to make change, to ensuring all go the extra mile to create a supportive environment and to creating a collaborative, open and supportive culture. Originally from Kent and a strong sportsman, Mark will be joined by his wife Ruth, who is looking forward to taking an active role in school life. He has three adult children.

Headmaster's Welcome

It is a great pleasure to welcome you to Kent College and to our school community. Located on the outskirts of the beautiful cathedral city of Canterbury, our school is proud both of its 130 years of history and tradition, and of its forward-looking, innovative approach to education. We are a school deeply rooted in the Christian Methodist tradition that welcomes all pupils of every faith and none, and celebrates diversity in all aspects of our school life. ‘Do all the good you can do’ is a guiding principle, and one that allows pupils to grow and develop into confident young adults, aware of their responsibilities and their place in the world.

Kent College has a reputation as a friendly school. It is most definitely a place where teachers really get to know the pupils, and have the time and space to give individual attention, both academically and pastorally. While it is a non-selective school, our students consistently achieve excellent academic results at GCSE, A level, and in the International Baccalaureate. We also offer a wide range of additional support for pupils including English language teaching in our International Study Centre, and a specialist Learning Support Centre. We were delighted that at our most recent full inspection (in 2015), the Independent Schools Inspectorate judged the school to be ‘excellent’ in every aspect – the highest grade possible.

Sport, Music and Drama all play a major role in our school life and offer opportunities for everyone, from beginners to elite level performers. We also offer a wide-ranging variety of activities and clubs, as well as the opportunity to work on our School Farm. All of these extra-curricular activities feed into the much wider theme that informs everything we do: that young people who feel good about themselves do well, whatever their chosen path may be. I would strongly encourage you to visit, to meet our staff and pupils, and to experience Kent College for yourself. I look forward to welcoming you.
