The Information and Communications Technology Department provides a quality learning experience for all members of the school. ICT is central to life in the 21st century and at Kent College is delivered across Key Stage 3, 4 and into the Sixth form as a discrete subject. Increasingly this technology is being developed in all areas of the curriculum as a support platform, aiding learning and teaching and for boarders as a vital link to home and family (using facilities such as Skype.)
The school uses the Internet and other networking technologies to maximum effect and has a fast (100 Mb/s) filtered broadband connection to the Word Wide Web. All students have their own MacBook provided in year 7. This allows them to access the internet through wireless technology, accessing both external websites and the schools own virtual learning environment. The subject is increasingly co-ordinating with other subject areas to provide cross-curricular learning.
The department is extremely well resourced with HD Digital Video cameras and Digital SLR cameras available in addition to the students own MacBook.
In years 7, 8 and 9 all students have at least 1 hour per week of discreet ICT teaching. The department offers the OCR Nationals Level 2 qualification which is a 100% coursework scheme that builds on skills to offer an excellent opportunity to develop a wide range of ICT skills with particular emphasis on creative media. Entry to the qualification is dependent on a students ability with some gifted students able to begin study in Year 8.
In the sixth form students can choose the OCR Nationals Level 3 qualification which offers a range of specialists pathways including Creative Media and Website Development. This qualification is, like the Level 2, 100% coursework based.
