Girls 1XI Hockey Team Success!

The Girls 1XI Hockey team have had a season full of success this year. Having entered the Investec Girls School Championship, a strong performance against a well drilled Hurstpierpoint side, saw the team triumph as 4-2 winners, potentially scoring goal of the season in the process as well as a Tilly Tillings’ hattrick. Next up, an experienced Epsom College team stood in the way of our Girls. On a cold evening in Surrey, the girls put in a mature performance to come out 2-1 winners following a late penalty converted ably by Jess McMeeking.
The Girls faced Reed’s in the Last 16 of the competition, and following a long Christmas break, the game was anyone’s for the taking. Reed’s started the game the stronger as our Girls tried to find a rhythm. But on the stroke of halftime, Aisla Naylor converted a Penalty Corner to take the lead. This was followed by a strong individual goal which sealed the deal. The team now faces St Edward’s Oxford in the quarter finals.
Each member of the team have played a crucial role in the success over the season, but special mention must go to Ailsa Naylor, who has led the team in both attitude and performance with her defensive strength and Penalty Corner drag flick. Tilly Tillings, her electric pace has caused defences trouble all year, highlighted by her hattrick against Hurstpierpoint College. Jess McMeeking, mazy runs down the wings often leading to goal opportunities and corners. And finally Wiebke Schuler, who filled the shoes of captain in the absence of Ailsa at the start of the season and has been the lynchpin of the team in the centre of midfield.
A fantastic achievement by all involved, but the season isn’t over and we are all eager to see the Girls make the National Finals on the 27th February.
