STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: PANDA
Year 13 and International Baccalaureate student, Panda, answered questions about life in the Sixth Form, co-curricular, and her aspirations to study Veterinary Medicine at University.
Tell us about yourself?
My name is Panda, I’m from Thailand, and I’m currently doing year 13 IB at Kent College. I came here at the start of Sixth Form as I believe this school would guide me well with university applications in the UK and internationally.
What do you study in the Sixth Form?
I do HL Biology, Chemistry, and French and SL Math, English and Geography. Besides from our 6 subjects, I must complete a TOK essay and an Extended Essay, which is a piece of research on a topic of our choice. I also must fulfil the 7 criteria for my CAS, which includes community service.
Do you have a scholarship at KC?
I currently have an IB scholarship. I had to write 2 essays and have an interview, but it isn’t as scary as it sounds. My grades are closely monitored to ensure that I’m keeping up with school academically, which is why I always go to clinics whenever I need help or struggling with something.
Do you do any co-curricular activities?
I do horse riding for games, as well as on Saturdays, and I joined MDV club last year as I was looking to apply to veterinary, which I did! I’m also doing Eco Warriors and currently undertaking the Environmental Learners Award. I also do charities as I think it's a great way to help support communities outside of school. I’m also a prefect for my boarding house.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years time? What do you want to do after Sixth Form?
Hopefully, I will be in my 4th year of University doing veterinary. I’ve always wanted to be a vet ever since I could remember, and I want to open my own practice one day and be able to help pets who are suffering.
What support have you had at KC?
All the teachers here are extremely supportive. It’s important to tell your teachers your goals and desired grades so they can help you achieve that. Its definently hard, I was required 666 or AAA for University and all my teachers pushed me towards this goal and I’m so grateful for that. There are also clubs that help you with University applications. Theres MDV, Oxbridge, and there's a few others for engineering and law as well. In sixth form It’s important that you choose some clubs that correlate to your field of interest at University as you will have something to talk about on your personal statement, but there's so many clubs in this school that the options are countless.
